South Africa: Seven people have been killed in the collapse of an apartment building, and search for more is ongoing

The collapse of a tower under construction in George Town, South Africa, has killed seven people so far. Thirty-three construction workers were rescued, but others are still missing. As of Tuesday, rescue operations were still ongoing.

“We are now carefully monitoring the situation step by step. It’s about walking around carefully trying to hear if we can hear the voices of those who are still alive. We heard some screaming. We use dogs to help us identify human noises.

When the dogs indicate that someone may be in the area, we use the technology to search for them until we reach them. It is a challenging task given the complexity and diversity of the building’s architecture”, said Colin Deiner, Western Cape provincial disaster manager.

A total of 42 people are currently being sought for their whereabouts, including 11 who have been located but have not yet been located. A team of 75 people is currently searching for them. South African police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
